This year on November 11th, marked the 100th year birthday for the Whirlpool Corporation. Throughout the years Whirlpool has become a stronger more profitable company, bringing consumers what they want and need in household appliances.
Lets take a bit of a history lesson about Whirlpool with some fun facts.
1911: Upton Machine Company is founded by Lou and Emory Upton in Benton Harbor, Michigan, to produce electric motordriven wringer washers. These models were some of the first clothes washers and only ran on electricity. The machine washed the clothes and had a manual ringer to ring out the water.
1917: The owner of Upton Machine Company, Lou Upton, wrote a letter to the employees, who were all female, telling them to take a paid week off of work to spend it with their husbands. Back then companies did not allow vacation time so this was unheard of.
1925: The Upton Machine Company became the sole provider of electrical and gas powered washing machines.
1938: The Whirlpool Corporation (then the Nineteen Hundred Corporation) invents the first washer with motorized agitation, ushering in a new era of time saving and convenience.
1948: The Nineteen Hundred Corporation (Whirlpool Corporation) successfully launches the first Whirlpool® brand name automatic washing machine. This allowed the company to transition from a manufacturer with one major trade customer (Sears) to launching its own branded appliances. This became the stepping stone for future growth.
1950: The Nineteen Hundred Corporation was renamed Whirlpool Corporation. The Whirlpool Corporation added a new line, the electrical dryer.
1955: The Whirlpool Corporation was listed in the New York Stock Exchange.
1960: Whirlpool introduced coin operated washers and dryers to the public by establishing the commercial laundry and dry-cleaning equipment division.
1970: Whirlpool recognized the need for energy and material conservation and established a new business model focused on energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.
1981: Electronics are added to the Whirlpool Corporation refrigeration line with introduction of the Systems Sentinel 1 technology.
1995: Construction is completed on a new plant in Greenville, Ohio, geared toward KitchenAid® brand small appliance manufacturing.
2009: Whirlpool Corporation opens the World of Whirlpool, a new product experience center in Chicago, Illinois.
