As a technology and gadget addict, devices are ever-changing. Out with the old in with the new. It seems to bring a lot of waste of electronics when you upgrade your devices. I try to recycle my electronics whenever possible. I resale items when I grow out of them, hand them down to my kids, and sometimes donate them to others or organizations that can find a use for them.
Not only do old gadgets fill up our landfills, but the power to use them takes electric resources. I have come to realize that I have more items plugged into power in my house than the average household. I try to conserve by using Smart Surge Protectors and unplugging devices. I also use rechargeable batteries whenever I can.
Did you know our computer processor has extra processing power that is not usually used? Processors have advanced over the years and are now usually designed well enough that we don’t see much lag on our computers, however there are lots of unused processing power being wasted and not used. Intel has come up with a way to reuse that processing power and apply it to life changing research.
There is a small app you can download from the Progress Thru Processors Facebook Fanpage. When installing the app you can choose which program you want to support. There are several projects to choose from. These are the 3 I am participating in.
Rosetta@home provides research that ultimately leads to finding cured for some major human diseases like HIV, Malaria, Cancer, and Alzheimer’s.
Climateprediction.net is the world’s largest climate forecasting climate experiment for the 21st century. It is a distributed computing project to produce predictions of the Earth’s climate up to 2100 and to test the accuracy of climate models.
Africa@home addresses these problems by providing a common framework for volunteer computing projects that focus on African needs.
If you want to donate you extra processing power, download the app and get started. A better world had individuals contributing.
