The Future Of WordPress

I have been kinda tracking the changes that WordPress version 3.0 is planning to roll out. I have heard that WordPress MU and single user will be merged into one platform. In my little small world, the only benefit merging would be if you have a single user blog and wanted to start a multi-user blog. In that case, you would not need to do anything with your blog, just add users.

wordpress But, one of the biggest benefits would be with the Buddy Press plugin. Buddy Press has already made itself available to be installed on single user blogs. However, you are very limited on the design because most themes for Buddy Press are for WordPress MU. This makes styling and designing these blogs not so easy. Also some of the plugins that go along with Buddy Press are made specifically for MU. Therefore they really don’t work correctly with the single user platform.

You ask what is Buddy Press? Well, it is actually a plugin that turns your WordPress blog into a community similar to Ning. With Ning doing away with their free option, I see lots of communities moving over to Buddy Press. The community members can make groups, add friends, and interact with each other. You control everything in your WordPress dashboard. The most attractive aspect of Buddy Press is that it is self hosted, unlike Ning. You can monetize it and use your own domain name without monthly and yearly fees.

Currently, you need a special theme to run Buddy Press. Or you can convert your theme by doing tons of edits to the php files. Hopefully with the WordPress 3.0 version, you will be able to do one click install with any theme and have Buddy Press up and running in no time.

Other changes with WordPress 3.0:

  • Bulk plugin upgrade option
  • Custom header and background options built into WordPress instead of your theme. (If your theme has them)
  • The ability to manage all sub-domains and sub-directories within one WordPress dashboard
  • Many new security features

I can’t wait to see all the new WordPress 3.0 upgrades come to life.

IMO, I think that the main changes are cosmetic, plus the merger of the two platforms.

Thanks for stopping by. Hope you are doing well.

I have been playing around with BuddyPress for MONTHS now and have finally been able to convert a none WPMU theme to BuddyPress compatibility. (That has been my latest project for weeks now.) Now that I have it figured out, I can start tweaking more of the backend of it and fishing throught he BP plugins that actually work with a single user installation. I chose BuddyPress way before I knew Ning was going to paid and I’m glad I did that. BuddyPress and WPMU has been my aggravation of choice for months. :)

    Take care,

Well, did you know that all your hard work will be for nothing within the next 2 weeks or so. I played with Buddy Press for a project I an working on but did not want WordPress MU. I found it with too many steps to make it work, plus I was aware of the merging of the platforms. I am so sorry you have worked so hard. Of what I am hearing, you will be able to use Buddy Press along with any WordPress theme with no customizations. And all the plugins will work too.

    Great post!
On my demo site (one where I usually play with themes and stuff) I have new WP 3.0 beta and I love it! The features are great. Although some of the older themes don’t work with it, but most new themes have been updated to have the seamless switch over 😉 BTW love your new design!

That’s awesome! Thanks for the info I was wondering about it – I think it’ll prove to be super useful and we’ll see some great communities come from it!

I honestly don’t think there is much instore except cosmetic improvements for the average WordPress user. But in the future if you decide to do more with your blog, you will be ale to.
