Texting While Driving- Do You?

So my daughter just turned 16 and has completed driver’s ed. She is eligible to get her license. She only has her permit right now. We are just waiting on the counselor to give her verification of enrollment. I just wanted to post about a conversation we has while she was driving the other day that doesn’t make since to me. She told me that there was gonna be a new law in Texas. One that says that you can’t text while driving if you are under 18. Now is that crazy or what!? My first response was why should anyone text and drive? I understand that less experienced drivers can be distracted easier than us more experienced drivers. Or as my daughter calls us- old people. But again, why should anyone text while driving. Doesn’t this distract anyone. I am not innocent. I have texted while driving- and that is one hard thing to do. I do not do that anymore. I still do text at the red light after I am fully stopped, but that is it. Who can see the road while they are looking at the screen of their cell phone. I don’t care how big your screen is you can not pay full attention to the road. I worked at a rental car company and recently quit. We rented so many cars to people who were rear ended by someone who was on their cell phone texting. At the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, there is a table listing the cellphone laws by state. Texas laws currently only ban cell phone and hand held use in school zones, intermediate license holders for the first twelve months, and bus drivers when a passenger 17 and younger is present. That is ludicrous! I support any laws prohibiting texting while driving. Even if that means I would no longer be able to a the red light. What are your thoughts on this issue?

I really wish people wouldn't text while driving. There was a statistic out that said texting while driving is 10 times more dangerous than drinking and driving.

  2. Kasey@ All Things Mamma says:

I've seen so many people almost cause wreaks because they are texting. It's not safe at all! I've done it – I admit, but I don't anymore!

  3. April says:

Omg this is so dangerous. i am guilty of attempting to before but never again I am not that coordinated

  4. Laurie says:

If you are going to have a teen with a phone, I would say no text messaging options. It is so dangerous on the road I cannot imagine tryin gto text!

I can barely text when I'm NOT driving!
Good luck to your daughter–we have another 12 years until we have to deal with driving, and it still makes me break out into a cold sweat! :)
