Social Media Day 2011 #smday

As I was reading my daily email subscription from Mashable this morning I found a very interesting topic about the second annual Social Media Day that will be held June 30, 2011.

I love the concept of the meetups that will happen worldwide in many communities. The event is a celebration of the technological advancements that enable everyone to connect with real-time information, communicate from miles apart and have their voices heard.

With social media we have been able to make personal connections and engage with brands and companies, meet new people online, and market our online content. Social media allows you to keep connected, and create connections. Without social media we would have to pick up the phone and make a call or send an email and wait for them to reply. Social media has allowed us to plan events and share them in real-time. When we get an RSVP it is immediate. We can see where our friends are with location-based apps, find great places to eat, and even share pictures. This technology has become such a needed part of our daily lives.

With Social Media Day people across the country will celebrate and bring attention to social media. They will meet some of their connections in person and listen to speakers talking about the importance and growth of social media.

I am on the leadership team for my local Beaumont Social Media Club and hold the position as the scribe. Locally we try to bring social media to the attention of local businesses. Those who are not participating in social media have no clue at what they are missing out on.

After reading the Mashable website I noticed a mat showing all the cities worldwide that are holding meetups for Social Media Day and noticed my small city of Beaumont on the map. One of the founders of the Beaumont Social Media Club, Bryan Lee, had created a meetup event for Southeast Texas locals to celebrate social media. If you are from this area, you should participate too. If you are not already involved in social media personally or for businesses purposes this would be a great opportunity to learn from the people who already are. If you are involved in social media, you can connect and celebrate with the world.

Check to see if your city has a meetup and get involved and follow @mashsmday Twitter account from Mashable.

I remember meetups for way back in my diaryland days!
Gosh that was 10 years ago. Now I feel like such an old fart.
I’m pretty sure the social media community in my area is slim and nil.
We’re not very progressive here in the good ‘ole bible belt.
