Purchasing A New Windows 7 Laptop At Staples

Staples is a store that is not in my local area. But there are several locations about 45 min away from me. I had the opportunity to visit the store and purchase a new PC. Prior to visiting the store I visited the Staples site to view what they had available and what was in stock at each store. I was able to find 2 laptops that I really liked. One was a 17.3 inch HP laptop and the other was a 15.6 inch Toshiba laptop. Both of these computers had features that I liked.

I found a store that would have both computers in stock so I could get hands on with them and make my decision. I drove to the store and arrived around 10am. I talked with the sales person, who was also an Easy Tech Supervisor and a manager in training. He had great knowledge of the laptops. We checked out the sound of the laptops and discussed their processors. The Toshiba had a quad core processor that allows you to multitask better than the HP. However the HP had a very fast processor that allows you to work in a program with speed. I felt that the HP with the 17.3 inch screen was just too much of a laptop for me and decided to purchase the Toshiba. At that point I was offered a warranty, which I turned down. I was also offered a $69 PC Setup Silver Package to create a boot CD for my new computer that would be running Windows 7. I also declined this and the tech’s response took me by surprise. He said “How are you going to get a boot CD then?” I told him I have made them before and could do it again, after all, I am That Tech Chick.

I advised  him that I would need a data transfer from my older (2002) computer running Windows XP to the new laptop running Windows 7. I told him I had recently reformatted the hard drive so not many files were on the computer. The computer has a 60GB hard drive and I did not even think 20GB was used. The tech told me that the transfer would be done and my computers would be ready by 5pm. I asked him if there was any possibility to have the computers ready by 3pm since I had kids to pick up from school. He told me there he would try, but no guarantee. I also told him that I did not want to make the drive twice unless I had to so would stay in the area shopping until it was ready. The tech took my phone number to notify me when it was ready. He also told me that he had 2 computers that he was currently running a virus scan to finish before mine. I was fine with and left. Shopped my heart out in the area and came back to the store around 4:45pm. At this I was told that my computer was not ready so I decided to take both the computers and try my luck at the transfer at another Staples store.

After leaving the the store, I called another Staples that was even closer to home. I spoke with the manager, and told him my situation. He told me no problem. He said bring the computers in and he would do the transfer while I wait in store. Since I had a small amount of space on the hard drive it wouldn’t take any time at all. When I arrived to the very busy Staples, the manager and several employees greeted me. The manager had an employee carry my computers into the store for me. Then he immediately started my new Toshiba up and setting it up including the Microsoft Windows 7 updates. He also explained to me that when purchasing a computer from Staples I will receive free online training to become familiar with the features of Windows 7 and Microsoft Office. Since I am Expert Level Certified in Microsoft Office, I am going to check the training out to see what new features the 2010 version has. Then one of the store’s Easy Tech Experts finished helping. Both the store manager and the Easy Tech Expert helped me feel comfortable in the store and handled other customers as well. I have a background in sales and their sales skills were great. They explained benefits of their services to other customers and gave them the option to make an educated decision on services. They took in 2 other computers while I was there.

Once  he actually started the transfer of data from my Windows XP computer to the new Toshiba with Windows 7, it only took 20-30 min. He also dusted out my old PC, which had many years of built up dust in it. I decided to make additional personal purchases including a can of compressed air and Microsoft Office 2010 key. He also installed Microsoft Office key on the computer for me. When my computer was done, the employees invited me back to visit their store soon. This is a store I will be returning too.

*Disclosure- I was given $650 by Glam Media on behalf of Microsoft and Staples to purchase the laptop of my choice and write about my experience. My opinions and story is all my own.

I purchased (last week) a Toshiba laptop with Windows 7 at Staples. I was not told that it needed an exrternal modem, by the folks at Staples. So when I got home (60 mile roundtrip) I tried to call then about it. I was put on hold two times and hung up on. I then left my name and phone number three othe r times for a tech to call so I could discuss the modem with them. My sister (who lives closer to Staples) finally went in on my behalf and was told that I needed to have purchased an external modem and offered to sell it to her for $70.00. No call from them at all! I also have tried to get on line for the free Microsoft online training for Windows 7 and tthe website Staples staff gave me does not get me to a training site. So, as you can see I am NOT happy with my Staples experience. I will try to call them tomorrow and see if they will deem me worthy enough to talk to about this situation. Thanks for letting me vent!

Staples is one of my most favorite stores! I purchased a laptop from them in 2004, then I bought my desktop from Staples last year.

They have great customer service and plenty of product to choose from.

You know, I have another computer with Windows 7. It is not a resource hog like Vista. It is a shame you dont hear as much as windows vista. But that is because people are not gripping as much.

i would never even think of going to Staples to buy a PC or laptop. I think of them as an office supplies store but its good to know about the great customer service

I am thinking about going back for a new printer because their knowledge was really great.

I’ve been using my Toshiba Satellite laptop since last summer and I am very satisfied with it. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it is plastic on the outside, and it is the first laptop I have had that is plastic. It works fine, I just am not as satisfied with the “feel” of it.

You made me look LOL. I dont think I have ever had a laptop that was not plastic.

That is awesome that you were able to get your transfer taken care of at another store! That says a lot for Staples Customer Service and the fact that they honored your purchase from another location. They get FIVE STARS!!! I have a HP Entertainment Laptop and it runs Windows XP, I’m not too familiar with Windows 7 and haven’t made the switch due to being scared to make the change! I’m sure I’ll move with the times and migrate over to Windows 7! I’ll be purchasing a new laptop soon and all of them have Windows 7 on them now, so I don’t have much of a choice. 😉

I love love love Windows 7 on my laptop. I want to buy it now for the desktop because I love the features.
I love the free online training though that you get when you buy from Staples. I’m probably not utilizing my Windows 7 as much as I should be.

I will be in the market for a new laptop in a few months, I will be sure to keep Staples in mind. DH just fixed my old crappy one, but it is painfully outdated.
