We are all too familiar with location based apps, well at least those of us who like to check into places and share it with our followers on Twitter and Facebook. We have been using apps like Gowalla, Foursquare and Whrrl. Mostof us have been using location based apps like these. They give us the ability to tell people and companies where we are at, share our opinions and tips, and even upload pictures from the location. But what happens if you don’t want everyone to know exactly where you are at every second of the day.
Private location based apps are a new wave of mobile apps coming into the app stores. Private means you only share what you want with who you want. Like your spouse, parents, or kids. Neer is one great example of a private location based app. With Neer you can privatey and automatically share your location with people you care about. You don’t have to share everywhere you go, they still leave that up to the public apps, just the places that really matter.
Neer works in the background on your mobile phone so you don’t have to pull it out when your hands are full to check in or out of a place.
Scenarios
- Say you don’t like to call your husband when he is at work, but it never fails that you need him to stop and get something before he gets home, or you just like to talk to him on his way home from his long day at work. After he downloads and sets up Neer, you can check if he has left work yet or not, so you you know when it is a perfect time to call him.
- You go to the grocery store a lot. Every time you leave the store one of the kids or your husband calls to tell you to get something they did not put on the list. You can set up Neer to know when you have left the store. If you have already left, they can see there is no need to call you unless they want you to turn around and go back.
Everyone plugged into Neer has to have a smartphone. The private location based app can be set up to send auto text messages for notifications to anyone you want to know where you are.
Another plus is the ability to share contacts with Neer installed on both users mobile devices.
The Neer private location based app is available for iPhone 4, Android, and Blackberry. It is not available for iPhone 3GS because it does not have the battery capacity to keep running in the background.
For more information, check out the Neer site and download the app or @NeerLife on Twitter.

YAY!
Been looking for some things like that.
Actually saw something like this as CES but can’t for the life of me remember.
What I want is an APP that will track the times I come and go from work and calculate my hours spent in certain places for certainly lengths of time. If anyone sees something like that, let me know!

Great post! I always wondered if there would be a way to not share your every move with the world! But, it is so handy for family to know. Thanks for sharing! Now I have to go get me a new phone, lol!
