I was so scared this year to file my taxes. I actually started making money on my blog and with my graphic design business, so I knew I had a lot of data entry to enter. I have prepared my own taxes since 1993. That was the first year I ever filed. I have been doing them myself ever since. This year was a bit difference with my small business income. On top of that my daughter Lakendra who is 17 worked and made a good bit of money. And the fact that she is 17. I no longer get the additional child tax credit for her. I thought it would be 18, but nope it is 17.
For the last few years I have filed my taxes using an online program. For the last 3 years I have used TurboTax. I like that it keeps all my previous years income tax information so I have less data entry to do. I also like how it takes you through questions to see if you qualify for tax credits. I am not talking about those questions that are on the IRS forms. But easy to understand questions that you can relate to.
I have my taxes pretty much done and it only took me about 10 hours. I have a lot of stuff that I had to enter and organize. I admit I was not as organized as I should have been. I changed organization and invoicing systems a couple times over the year and finally found a system that seems to work for me.
I am glad I am getting a refund this year. I was afraid with the small business income, I would not get anything back. But luckily I am. I know I would have paid quite a bit if I were to have to take my taxes to an accountant this year. I probably would have had a heart attach that would have cost me even more.
But bottom line, I am a dedicated customer of TurboTax. I highly recommend using TurboTax to anyone who prepares their own taxes. And no this is not a sponsored post, however it is an affiliate link. By the way, you can add all your information and try out the program. You don’t have to pay for it until you file your taxes. It is tax time and I wanted to tell everyone I filed my own. I need to go yell it from some roof tops cause I was doubting myself at first but I got it all done. I need to give myself a nice pat on the back for that one.
Do you prepare your own taxes?

@Jess – Yeah, we just met with our accountant today. I’ve been working online full time since the beginning of 2009, and haven’t filed taxes yet – so I’m a little apprehensive to say the least! Our accountant is going to take care of ’09 and ’10 for us, and then show us how to manage or books quarterly using quickbooks, and file on our own at the end of the fiscal using turbo tax…
Looking forward to a much more organized 2011.
Great post!

My oldest daughter has to do hers this year too. I will be using turbotax for her so from here on out, all her info is in the same place.
I really did not want to review it per se but wanted to tell everyone what I use and why. And I have an affiliate to it too. It is great when you can write about something you have long term personal experience with and possibly make some money too.
I love TurboTax! I use them every year and do our taxes and also my moms.

I lumped them together as one total income under consulting. I did not do individual entries, but I did do all my expenses as individual entries.
Thanks, that’s good to know for next years taxes.
