Blogging While Brown

I want to read about issues I face day to day in my life. As you know, or if you don’t, I am biracial. My race is black and white. My children are black. I want to read about hair struggles, growing up in the hood, soul food, hair products that I can use.

The minorities in our society are also minorities in the blogosphere.

I have noticed that there are not as many minorities either blogging or “making it” blogging. I search and don’t find that many. I look for other blogs that I can relate to. This prompted me to ask on Twitter where they were because I want to read them. I had some respond but not many.

The reason why I ask is, I want to read about issues I face day to day in my life. As you know, or if you don’t, I am biracial. My race is black and white. My children are black. I want to read about hair struggles, growing up in the hood, soul food, hair products that I can use. On Twitter I had a response asking “why”. She asked why I wanted to read minority blogs if it was content that mattered, I answered her telling her that yes, it is about the content. Content that I can relate to. In everyday life the majority believed the minority should conform to the majority. I feel the minority should be proud of who they are and reach out to other minorities.

Then I came across Blogging While Brown. It is a conference for minorities reaching out and sharing. A friend of mine Danyelle, from The Cubicle Chick told me she attended Blogging While Brown last year and enjoyed the conference. I plan to make every attempt to go this year in June; I will also continue to seek out other minority bloggers.

Are you a minority blogger seeking other minority bloggers to connect with?

Hi I agree there is a minority in brown blogs but even more so with biracial people. That is one of the reasons i decided to start blogging. My children are half black and half mexican they have two different cultures. Thanks for sharing about this conference. i think i may check it out myself.

I was actually able to attend the Bloggin while Conference. I am very glad I was able to. I was able to meet bloggers from all over the blogosphere and learned so much. I loved the since of community. Next year it will be held in LA. Make sure you sign up to go.

I am also attending Blogalicious in Miami during the month of October of this year. You should check that one out also.

  2. I like this post a lot. I love being a blogger but sometimes you want to find the blogs that you can relate to on a more personal level. Content and “content that you can relate to” are two different things. I remember when I posted the review on my blog on a black hair care company and I got some “interesting” emails. (To say the least.) I have quite a few projects up my sleeve to not only bring women bloggers but “women of color” bloggers together.

I think that you should check out Blogalicious. I’m going this year, as it’s in Miami and TOO close for me NOT to go. I think you will like it’s focus and that it’s EXACTLY what you’re looking for.

There are also a few social networks out here for women bloggers of colors founded by Jennifer James (the woman behind Mom Bloggers Club).

Keep me updated on your new projects.

    Take care,
    Shynea

I know at least 50 and on a personal level. There are more that I just haven’t hooked up with yet. You should tie into some of the networks like Mom Bloggers Club!

Thanks for the Blogging While Brown (BWB) shout out. I’m the Director of Outreach and Education for this year’s DC conference. I agree that there should be more outreach and collaboration between bloggers of color. There’s a lot that can be accomplished from building that strong platform. I look forward to meeting you in DC. I will definitely start following your blog via Bloglovin.

  7. I can totally related to that, I have been looking for hair products for my daughters for the longest, my mom, my sister and I we’ve used nothing but regular aloe shampoo vaseline and water on our hair and that work for us. but my babies have some dry hair and the stuff in the stores are made for caucasian hair which dry her hair even more so I’m still using A&D on them. I wish there was more black blogs and website out there that teach by experience on these kinda subject. eh well I guess I have to do it then…lol

  8. Yes you and I have talked about this at length. I think going to the conference will be a good experience for us both!

I hear you Jessica. I’m on the search myself. I read Cutie Bootie Cakes. I like her posts quite a bit. I also read Racialicious and Shadow and Act which can be a bit more political but are interesting and fun to read. If you find any good blogs, please share.

  10. Dee@ CWM says:

I totally relate to what you are saying. I was on the hunt for minority blogs not too long ago myself. I did find a few that I have bookmarked and can share if you like. I read all types of blogs but also like you am looking for More I can relate to. I don’t talk about everday issues much on my blog but am looking to change that once I feel more comfortable doing so. I’m rather new to blogging and my hubby does not like the idea of me sharing our business with the world. I’m working on that.

My hubby was a little hesitant too. But I hold off on posting too personal. You can always write about your thoughts. Think of it like a conversation you are having with yourself about something that you have an opinion on.

  11. Cindy says:

I’m pretty darn white, but I can understand the need to share experiences with other bloggers. I wish you luck finding minority bloggers. I can think of a few, and I’m sure you already know who they are, but there aren’t many, it seems. Not nearly enough! This blogosphere is way too pasty.

Have you worked with Blogalicious at all? They put together a conference as well and it looks really fun and informative.
